NMN for Glaucoma: What the Evidence Actually Shows

Category: neurological | ICD-10: H40.9 | Evidence tier: mouse-only

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often associated with raised intraocular pressure. Untreated, it leads to irreversible vision loss.

NMN relevance: the published evidence

A widely-cited mouse study (Williams 2017) showed nicotinamide protected retinal ganglion cells in a glaucoma model. Small human pilot trials of high-dose nicotinamide in glaucoma showed visual function gains. NMN itself has not been tested in glaucoma, and pressure-lowering drops or surgery remain standard.

Questions to ask before supplementing

No NMN dose validated; nicotinamide pilot used 1.5-3 g/day (different molecule).

Contraindications and red flags

Never replace prescribed glaucoma drops with supplements.

Bottom line for Malaysian patients

NMN is not registered with NPRA as a treatment for any specific condition; it is sold as a general health supplement. If you have glaucoma, use this page as a question list for a registered medical practitioner before adding NMN to existing therapy. Read our safety guide for full red-flag context.
